Global Learning

With a core value to be Globally Inspired, exposing our students to diverse cultures and global perspectives is an integral aspect of our future-focused vision. Weaving worldwide issues into classes and courses, from environmental sustainability and climate change in science to geopolitical topics in social studies, WPGA also offers the following programs featuring a distinctly global perspective.

GLOBAL STUDIES PROGRAM

Our senior social studies department, inspired by their early participation at Harvard Graduate School’s Think Tank on Global Education, established the Global Studies Program, a two-year program that has students create solutions to current global issues that can be implemented at a local level, which they present at an annual symposium at postsecondary partner institutions: UBC’s Liu Institute for Global Issues and Western Washington University (Canadian/American Program), the latter which they visited in fall 2024.

Global Studies Scholars graduate with the Dogwood Global Studies Diploma in addition to their high school diploma. To graduate as a Global Studies Scholar, students must have successfully completed one Global Online Academy course as well three AP courses. WPGA is the only ISABC and CAIS school to offer a dual diploma program.
LANGUAGE PROGRAM

At WPGA, our Third Language Program fosters global awareness and multilingual proficiency from a young age. In Junior School, students explore French, Mandarin, and Spanish, selecting a dedicated third language stream by Grade 2. In Senior School, third language study is optional, with AP opportunities in all three languages and immersive learning experiences that emphasize mastery and enjoyment.

  • JUNIOR SCHOOL LANGUAGE PROGRAM

At WPGA, language is approached from a holistic and global perspective. Students not only learn vocabulary and syntax but also explore and celebrate the cultural practices, art, music and landscape of the countries whose people speak that language.

Our junior school teachers use pedagogy (Accelerative Integrated Methodology) as their principal teaching method for French, Spanish and Mandarin; AIM uses gestures, storytelling and word associations for rapid comprehension of high-frequency vocabulary. Our languages teachers all receive training in AIM, which is research based and proven to facilitate second/third language learning more effectively than other methods.

From junior kindergarten, students take French, Mandarin and Spanish. The focus is on exposure and creating maximum familiarity with the language—instructional minutes increase for each language each year. In grade 2, students select a third language stream (Mandarin or Spanish) and are encouraged to choose a language separate from their home language.* Exemptions are permitted in certain cases; these students receive extra skills support in lieu of language block.

Beginning in grade 7, students can join study clubs for international language exams such as the Diploma of French Language Studies (DELF) and Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE).
  • SENIOR SCHOOL LANGUAGE PROGRAM

In the Senior School, French is a requirement through grade 10; third language learning is optional. Foundational, standard and enriched-level programs in French are offered in grade 8; standard and enriched classes are offered in grades 9 and 10. Spanish and Mandarin follow one stream; for Mandarin, both heritage (Mandarin as the language spoken at home) and non-heritage tracks are offered. Students may take AP classes in all three languages.

The emphasis is on enjoyment and mastery of language, not speed of learning, and reflects teachers’ focus on comprehensive input (CI), an immersive approach that includes all forms of expression and maximizes exposure to the target language. This method increases confidence and comprehension by making language learning as fun, frequent and accessible as possible.

The Senior School offers practice clubs in French and Spanish, and opportunities to interact with their teachers in the target language at any point. Spanish Club includes a service aspect, teaching children in Guatemala – our students love connecting with their younger peers in Spanish to facilitate their learning of the English language.

  • DEBATE AND SPEECH PROGRAM

WPGA’s speech and debate teams compete at the intermediate level (grades 6/7) and senior level (grades 8–12); both clubs participate in local, provincial, national and international competitions. Rachel Jia ‘27 has qualified for the 2025 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Malaysia (spring 2025), and Emily Zhao ‘26 has qualified for Team Canada (one of five Team Canada members) at the World Schools Debating Championships in Panama (summer 2025).

The debate and speech program includes 60 students in grades 8-12 and, as of fall 2024, 52 students in grades 6/7. The intermediate program is mentored by senior school students, who provide instruction and support to their grades 6/7 peers under the tutelage and guidance of Arghya Dev Biswas Aryan, Head Debate Coach & Program Coordinator.

WPGA will host the Junior Speech Nationals in May 2025, and seeks to defend its 2023 and 2024 titles.
  • MODEL UN

WPGA’s Model United Nations (Model UN) Club has been at the forefront of K-12 Model UN programs since the school’s inception. A total of 120 students are members of Model UN in the Senior School; 60 students in grades 6/7 take part in the junior program.

The senior club participates in 6-8 conferences annually, including WPGA’s own Vancouver Model Youth United Nations (VYMUN) - the only training opportunity in the province for students from schools across the Lower Mainland to learn about debate and negotiation in a simulated Model UN environment. WPGA partners with UBC Alumni Centre to host VYMUN and offers an elementary school version of VYMUN at WPGA that same weekend. VYMUN will mark its 20th anniversary in fall 2025. Student secretariats of VYMUN have graduated to attend many Ivy league schools and serve as Secretariats at and .

In 2024, our Model UN team attended Harvard Model Congress San Francisco; over Spring Break 2025, the team will take part in Harvard Model Congress in Brussels, thereafter alternating between annual competitions in Asia and Europe.

WPGA also offers Model UN camps during holiday breaks. These camps are great opportunities for a range of students, novice and experienced, to explore Model UN and debate in a fun, casual setting.
